In this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/cas-sanderson_my-price-scraping-experiment-is-complete-activity-7061533398359527424-amOg\/?utm_source=share&#038;utm_medium=member_android\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">LinkedIn post<\/a>, it becomes clear once again what impact price alignment has on sellers&#8217; margins. <\/p><p class=\"theme-wp-block gb-responsive-796625-identifier\">But what exactly happens during price alignment and how is it executed? This process can, of course, vary from company to company:<\/p><div class=\"theme-block-list\"><ol class=\"theme-wp-block gb-responsive-958472-identifier wp-block-list\"><li class=\"theme-wp-block desktop-bg-style-square xl-bg-style-square lg-bg-style-square md-bg-style-square sm-bg-style-square desktop-gb-has-no-icon xl-gb-has-no-icon lg-gb-has-no-icon md-gb-has-no-icon sm-gb-has-no-icon gb-responsive-441431-identifier\">Data Collection: To compare prices on both platforms, data about the products is needed. In particular, the Act Against Restraints of Competition, i.e., German antitrust law, comes into play here. As already mentioned, Amazon is well-known to the German Federal Cartel Office. Whether the BKA is monitoring Amazon due to price alignment may be the case. However, it is highly doubtful that Amazon would incur a penalty for this. Price agreements are generally illegal and violate antitrust law, as they hinder free competition.<br><br>Example: Amazon.de and Otto.de make an agreement that Otto.de will lower the price of toothbrushes by 10% in January, and Amazon will follow suit in February.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><p class=\"theme-wp-block gb-responsive-563581-identifier\">The first case does not constitute an abuse of a dominant position to the detriment of consumers. On the contrary, buyers benefit from the price alignment, as they now receive the same low price on every platform. Therefore, a conviction and punishment of Amazon based solely on a price alignment is legally justifiable only if it occurs in combination with a price agreement.<\/p><p class=\"theme-wp-block gb-responsive-437434-identifier\">This concept may be all well and good for Amazon, the consumer, and possibly other e-commerce platforms. But there is a vital stakeholder in this construct who does not benefit here. And if you have read this text so far in the hope that price alignment is illegal, then I have unfortunately bad news for you.<\/p><h2 class=\"theme-wp-block wp-block-heading gb-responsive-318992-identifier\">How do Amazon sellers benefit despite price alignment?<\/h2><p class=\"theme-wp-block gb-responsive-813447-identifier\">Jeff Bezos once said a very nice sentence that perfectly summarizes the entire situation:<\/p><figure class=\"theme-wp-block wp-block-pullquote desktop-bg-style-circle xl-bg-style-circle lg-bg-style-circle md-bg-style-circle sm-bg-style-circle desktop-gb-has-no-icon xl-gb-has-no-icon lg-gb-has-no-icon md-gb-has-no-icon sm-gb-has-no-icon gb-responsive-237838-identifier\"><blockquote><p>\u201cWe\u2019re not in the business of helping people sell things, we\u2019re in the business of helping people buy things.\u201d<\/p><cite>Jeff Bezos<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure><p class=\"theme-wp-block gb-responsive-128452-identifier\">What Bezos means by this is that marketplace sellers do not have priority at Amazon. In this specific case, sellers need companies that are well-versed in pricing and the application of effective pricing strategies.<\/p><p class=\"theme-wp-block gb-responsive-576472-identifier\">As we have already established, it is legal in Germany for Amazon to perform a price comparison with, for example, Google Shopping. There is nothing we can change about that. Sellers must therefore sometimes simply accept that they occasionally lose the Buy Box because they have not lowered their prices.<\/p><h3 class=\"theme-wp-block wp-block-heading gb-responsive-228416-identifier\">Effective Pricing Strategies for Increased Revenue and Profit<\/h3><p class=\"theme-wp-block gb-responsive-991082-identifier\">An effective strategy to minimize the impact of price alignment is, in any case, to improve one&#8217;s own pricing strategy.
