Anyone who takes a look around Amazon will quickly notice that the search results follow the same pattern.

And what stands out the most? It’s not the organic results, which simply match the search query well. Rather, the first rows are filled with Sponsored Brands, Amazon’s Choice, and Bestsellers.

But what does all this mean? And how can you obtain such a label for your products? We have analyzed the first rows of the search results and summarized the most important information for you.

The Top Positions in Amazon’s Search Results

Marketplace Pulse examined the structure of search results on Amazon in its study “Marketplace Year in Review 2019.” After all, sellers alone spent $10 billion on advertising with the online giant in the USA.

One can already guess how the search results are structured. They are filled with Sponsored Brands and products that the Amazon algorithm has rated particularly well.

The first row of search results consists solely of Sponsored Brands. In the following rows, products with the Bestseller or Amazon’s Choice label stand out clearly from other organic results.

Theoretically, any seller on Amazon can utilize Sponsored Products or Brands. (Of course, for Sponsored Brands, you must have a registered brand with Amazon.) The difference lies in whether you are promoting individual products or your brand. The result, however, is the same: increased visibility.

“Sponsored Brands are ads that include your brand logo, a custom headline, and up to three of your products. These ads appear in search results and help increase the recognition of your brand and product portfolio.”

“Help Amazon customers find and purchase your products with ads displayed in search results and product detail pages.”

Amazon

In their study, Marketplacepulse found that ONLY Sponsored Brands were displayed in the first row of search results. In the second row, three out of five displayed products were sponsored. The relevance of sponsorship is therefore clear, and you should definitely consider whether it is a worthwhile investment for your business, so you don’t get lost on page six of the search results (to be honest, products become virtually invisible by page two).

An important aspect of sponsorship is that it is often keyword-based. Your products do not appear randomly; instead, they are shown to users who have searched for a specific keyword. This brings you a significant step closer to your target audience. By being prominently placed in the first rows of search results, you ensure high visibility for your products and, consequently, a significantly increased likelihood of the product being purchased – they are the first thing customers see in response to their search query.

The reason for the success of Sponsored Ads lies in the fact that they are not easily distinguishable from regular search results at first glance and are thus perceived as organic, as they look just like normal products. The same applies to Bestsellers and Amazon’s Choice products, which are easier to identify due to their prominent labels. Sponsored products, on the other hand, only have a small, light gray text that marks them as such.

Some key factors for the success of your Sponsored Ads:

  • Keywords: Find out which search terms your customers are using. This could be the term “phone case,” for example. Set this as a keyword. When a customer searches for this word, campaigns containing that keyword will be displayed to them. You can find more information on handling keywords here.
  • Good Amazon SEO: You should optimize this before your first campaign. On one hand, because the ads are keyword-based. You need to not only set a keyword but also ensure that your product page is optimized for it. Good SEO is also relevant because good product texts, images, etc., create a more appealing impression and thus lead to more clicks.
  • Performance Monitoring and Optimization: Regularly check how well your campaigns are performing. If you are not achieving the desired goal or if they are unprofitable, you should optimize the campaigns. For example, you can adjust your keywords or your budget (the amount you pay for the campaigns).

The costs for sponsorship are calculated based on the CPC principle. This means you pay for each click on your ad. Therefore, you should aim to achieve a high conversion rate so that as many customers as possible not only click but also make a purchase.

Bestseller

In the search results, some products feature a prominent orange badge labeled ‘Bestseller.’ When you hover over it with the mouse, the category in which the product is ranked number one among bestsellers is displayed.

For example, when searching for smartphone cases, a bestseller from the category “Waterproof Phone Cases” appears. By clicking on the category, you get a ranking of the bestsellers. Amazon’s headline on this page states that these are “our most popular products, based on orders” and that they are “updated hourly.”

But what really lies behind the label?

Amazon doesn’t reveal all the details here either, but a few things are clear:

  • Each item has a bestseller rank that indicates how well the product sells compared to others in the same category. Position number 1 receives the coveted label, which is prominently displayed in the search results.

  • All other products can find their bestseller rank on their product page. A rank is assigned for each category in which the item is listed. Therefore, in this example, there are four ranks corresponding to each category. To ensure that all products have the same chances, Amazon states that it updates the bestseller rank hourly.

  • The prominent label has a psychological effect on shoppers. On one hand, there is the striking signal color that automatically draws attention. On the other hand, the term “bestseller” gives the buyer a sense of security. If many others have already purchased the product, it can’t be bad at least. It suggests that the seller is reliable.
  • To win the label for yourself, sellers need to take several actions. Clearly, those who sell the most will receive the badge. To achieve this, you should increase your visibility by optimizing your product page and focusing on good Amazon SEO. Additionally, you should keep your metrics in check, which also determine the winning of the Buy Box.

Amazon’s Choice

Since 2017, the Amazon’s Choice label has also been available on the German marketplace. It was originally developed to simplify shopping with Alexa. The smart home assistant always suggests previously ordered items first when placing an order. If it finds no matches, Amazon’s Choice is suggested. Therefore, there is significant purchasing power behind the label.

That the perfect customer journey is a top priority for Amazon is also evident in this label when you look at the well-known criteria for it:

  • Prime Shipping: Customers want to receive their goods as quickly as possible. With Prime shipping, they are accustomed to having their items in hand the next day. Since customer satisfaction is paramount at Amazon, the online giant aims to always provide fast delivery to its customers. Therefore, you need to rely on FBA or Seller Fulfilled Prime.
  • Low Return Rate: Naturally, every item that leaves your warehouse should be in perfect condition. However, you can also reduce your return rate with good, detailed product descriptions. Depending on the industry, customers return items at different rates. In the fashion industry, for example, returns are quite common. This is also factored into the evaluation of this rate, as it compares items only within their category.
  • High Purchase Rate by Other Buyers Searching for This Keyword: Amazon compares how often other customers who searched for the same keyword purchased certain products. This is where good Amazon SEO pays off again. Ensure that your product ranks for relevant keywords and thus has high visibility in searches for them.

In contrast to bestsellers, Amazon’s Choice is keyword-based. Bestsellers are category-based. Therefore, it is quite possible that you receive multiple bestsellers (from different categories) for your search, but you will only be shown one Amazon’s Choice product.

All these metrics are also relevant for winning the Buy Box. Therefore, try to align all processes towards the customer so that they have a perfect shopping experience.

Conclusion

Sellers on Amazon should definitely engage with the labels and Sponsored Ads. While you can only earn the labels with convincing performance (and good SEO), you can theoretically always invest in advertisements to be among the top search results.

Both options provide you with significantly higher visibility, which is (almost) invaluable. After all, you want to see your products at the top, not languishing on page 2.

Whether it’s advertisements or labels, anyone who wants to be among the top sellers must know what they are doing. With some preliminary considerations and smart decisions, nothing stands in the way of your ascent.
